2008-04-12 Jesusita, 22nd Annual State Trail Days

Hello All, The April 7th Jesusita State Trail Days was another successful trail event!. On short notice we had a crew of five volunteers including Sean the new guy, Jim “the Hammer” Blakley, Otis “mule skinner” Calef, Richard the “Alaskan Grizzley”, and me. Before, during, and after pictures are available here: The crew worked the lower Jesusita slide from 9:30am through 1:30pm. Slide material/debris was removed from the trail bed and transported to the trail up from the slide area via wheelbarrow. Removal of the debris improved the useable trail bed’s width from 12 inches to three to four feet (back to last December’s width). Outslope of trail was maintained to a guideline of 3 to 5 degrees on throughout most of the slide area. As slide material to accumulates on this section of trail, users are forced to the outside edge of the trail. Off the edge of the trail is a 20 to 30 foot vertical drop to the creek bed. Due to the instability of the soils at this location this slide area requires maintenance every couple of months. The trail/cliff on the North side of the slide lost a substantial amount of soil between December and April. The trail section here is not sustainable and will need to be abandoned, revegitated, and rerouted shortly. The removed slide material/debris was used to enhance a grade reversal built up from the slide last December. It will route water effectively off the trail for some time to come. During the maintenance event approximately forty pedestrians (hikers, runners, three fire crew in training) and fifteen cyclists traveled the trail. All trail users expressed appreciation for the work on the slide area and commented on the marked safety improvement. A thank you goes to the City and Forest Service for support and coordination on this event. Thanks trail volunteers!
